Differences in Protein Powders

When you go to the store or online there seem to be hundreds of different protein powders. What are the differences between whey, plant, soy, grass fed beef protein powders? Today I want to break it down for you so you know what to look for next time you need protein powder.

I have been a personal trainer and group ex instructor for 17 years and in all those years I have tried ALL the protein powder. I mean I have even tried goat milk protein powder (don’t, its really gross!) so I want to help you with this. Since I’ve tried them all I want you to save your hard earned dollars and don’t waste them on bad tasting protein powder. Here are the differences between the 4 categories of protein powders and my favorite. If you prefer to watch/listen click here for the Youtube video.

I think everyone needs a high quality protein powder in their pantry because it is a quick way to get in some protein. I drink a protein smoothie every day. It takes 2 minutes to make and gives me 30 grams of protein to start my day.

Whey protein powder is the most known protein powder. Whey is what is usually on the store shelves. It’s cheap and easy to make. Whey is dairy so if you have a sensitive to dairy don’t use whey protein powder. I don’t use whey for that reason, it bloats me. Read labels as most whey protein powders add in fillers and additives to make it cheaper.

Grass-fed beef protein powder gets confused for whey. Grass-fed beef protein powder is like a ground up steak. There is no dairy in grass fed beef protein as they use the meat for the protein powder. I have 2 favorite brands for grass-fed beef protein. If you want fun flavors (salted caramel, iced coffee) you need to try the Prime Protein brand. My favorite flavor is the iced coffee. Click here for 15% off This brand is clean and they are rolling out a new flavor, Cinnamon Roll, with no stevia in it. The other brand I like is FASTer Way to Fat Loss. They are coming out with a holiday flavor, Peppermint Mocha, which I can’t wait to try! Their vanilla flavor is really good and mixes well in a blender. This is also very clean with no chemicals or fillers.

Soy Protein Powder this protein powder gets a bad rap due to a bad study that was done years ago on rats. This study has been debunked and soy is fine for you to use as long as it is non-gmo soy. The problem is with GMO soy. I use a non-gmo soy protein powder and I love it because it tastes great, mixes well and the one I use has prebiotics in it to help with bloating and digestion. This is the one I use.

Plant Protein Powder plant protein powder is typically made up of seeds and nuts. There are a lot of plant protein powders on the market and a lot of them are high in calories and carbs. If you are going to use plant protein read labels and find one that is clean without a lot of extra fillers in it. Plant protein tastes some time to get use to as it has a distinct flavor. I have used this plant protein powder and it tastes the best out of all of them I have tried.

I hope this helped you learn the differences in protein powders so you can choose the one that is the best for you. If you have any questions reach out to me.
