How to Reach Your Fitness Goal

How to reach your fitness goal

When you walk into a gym do you feel overwhelmed?  Do you think, “What am I supposed to be doing to reach my fitness goal?” Your workout consists of logging in countless miles on the cardio machines because the thought of weight lifting is intimidating or you would have no idea where to begin with the different types of weights. You can try looking in fitness magazines for a cookie cutter workout they promise will “melt those pounds away”, or you can train with a personal trainer who can guarantee success in your fitness endeavors.

There are three different types of training sessions you can work with a personal trainer:  1-on-1 personal training, semi-private training, and group training.  Let’s discuss what each different session entails so you can choose what training program would be best suited for you.

1-on-1 Personal Training

Most people are familiar with 1-on-1 personal training.  You meet with a personal trainer and they will coach you 1-on-1 with a personalized workout tailored to your needs and fitness goals.  Typically, you meet multiple times a week for a tailored workout and your trainer will discuss with you your individual nutritional needs which will come with weekly meal plans.  This type of training is great for people who are rehabbing an injury, a beginner (meaning you have never exercised before), or if you have a very specific goal (Example-a basketball player that wants to increase their jump by 2 inches).

Semi-Private Training

Semi-private training is training with a personal trainer and a small group, generally no more than four people.  Generally, the four people will have very similar fitness goals in mind they wish to accomplish, such as overall weight loss or muscle gain. This also comes with nutritional guidance and meal plans for the group to follow. Semi-private training is great for people who like the motivation of a group atmosphere, who are looking to lose weight or tone up with people who have similar goals in mind, and who still want a personal trainer to individualize their workouts.

Group Training

Group Training is training done with a personal trainer in a bigger group of 10+ participants in them.  You will get a workout to do but it may not be specifically personalized to your fitness goals.  The trainer that works with the group should be able to offer modifications if you need them during any point of your workout.  This type of training is great for people who like to have fun while working out and who enjoy working out in a larger group setting. In these group training sessions you still have the accountability of showing up to work out with a personal trainer, but you will not have the pressure of having someone watching your every move.
