Thriving in Your 40s+: Fitness, Fun, and a Little Bit of Pumpkin Spice
I feel like fall is more of a time of resolutions than the New Years but this time of year can also be BUSY! Getting kids into a new routine, ourselves into a new routine, back to school information, activities, changing schedules and somehow we are suppose to support our hormones during this time too! But, no fear I got you. In this post we are going to talk about how to support your hormones during this busy season while also enjoying the season. We only get so many of them so let’s celebrate them ๐

Tip 1 Strong, not stressed
If you want to start balancing your hormones, pick up the dumbbells. Cardiovascular exercise is great but in our 40s and beyond it’s more important to strength train. Strength training helps up to build muscle, burn fat and increase our bone density. If you are a beginner start with 2 days per week of large muscle groups like squats, hip bridges, lunges, shoulder press, row and chest press. If currently exercise than you can lift weights 4 days per week and break it up into body parts.
Tip 2 Nourished, not deprived
The number 1 thing I see when I work with a new client is how little they are eating. Eating low calories for so long isn’t helping you to burn fat, in fact, it is slowing down the rate at which your body will lose fat because you are starving it. Learning to eat the right amount of food for your body is key in our 40s+. In order to balance hormones, burn fat and build muscle we have to make sure we are eating the right amount of food for us. Each of us is an individual so all these fad diets we have done for years are not helping us. They are hurting us. Eat more whole foods or work with me to find out how much you should be eating for your goals.
This doesn’t mean you can’t have wine or your favorite Halloween candy. It means you can enjoy those things but also eat for your body so you feel nourished. When you feel nourished you are less likely to reach for candy. Did you know that protein helps stop sugar cravings?! Getting a sugar rush-eat some protein!
Tip 3 Add in some fun
As our kids grow up and leave the nest, itโs on us to bring more fun back into our own lives. I have a friend that plays pickleball on Friday nights with a group of them and then they have a cocktail afterwards. I have another friend that meets up with different people at coffeeshops on Saturday mornings. What are some ways you can add in seasonal fun? Here are some ideas: a pumpkin carving contest, tailgating before the big game, finding the best pumpkin spice latte at your local coffee shops, or hiking.
Thriving in your 40s and beyond is about strong bodies, balanced nutrition, and enjoying the little things that make life fun. How are you going to add fun to this season?
