Why is fiber so important to your body?

Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that can not be broken down into sugar molecules. Fiber helps keep your blood sugar in check and fiber can ward off hunger.

Fiber is very beneficial to your gut health. It helps everything move along smoothly 🙂 Fiber is found in a lot of different kinds of foods. Aim to eat 25 grams of fiber per day . About 95% of American’s don’t get 25 grams of fiber per day! Increasing your fiber will help with bloating, weight loss, digestion, lower cholesterol and lower blood sugar levels.

This month my coaching group is focusing on getting in 25 grams of fiber per day and drinking 1/2 their bodyweight in oz of water per day (minimum). Why did I choose fiber to focus on? Well for one thing fiber keeps the gut healthy-80% of the immune system is in the gut…..healthy gut=healthy immune system. Secondly, if you are focusing on getting in 25 grams of fiber per day you will automatically start to eat healthier.

Here are some simple tips to increase your fiber:

  1. Add produce to every meal-Include a banana with your breakfast, have a salad at lunch and make sure to add some sweet potatoes to your supper.
  2. Know your grains. There are many grains out there that are high in fiber. Oatmeal and quinoa are two of my favorites. Try new recipes with the grains to see how you like them cooked or uncooked (overnight oats!)
  3. Nuts and seeds. Chia seeds are high in fiber and easy to add to your morning smoothie. Topping your salad with some nuts with give you crunch+a fiber boost.
