Why Should You Take Supplements?
Did you know that the major cause of non-infectious (lifestyle) diseases are nutritional deficiencies. Meaning, we are missing or not getting enough of important compounds such as a protein, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, probiotics and an array of broad-spectrum polyphenols. One example of these benefits… 60% of all cancer-related deaths can be prevented. There are too many nutritional-based diseases and disorders to list but the fact is, we all have nutritional deficiencies and we can do something about them before it becomes too late.
We should all be concerned by the ramifications of being nutrient deficient, and prioritizing healthy aging, and slowing aging at the cellular level. The health of your cells strongly influences your overall health, and our cells are continuously damaged by environmental exposure. Even the simple act of eating a meal can result in the formation of free radicals. Free radicals can damage cell components like DNA and trigger normal inflammatory reactions which are thought to contribute to cellular aging.
This is why supplementation is so important to our health. But not any supplementation, you want to make sure your supplements are free from chemicals. Since the industry is unregulated companies can say what they want and basically use what they want in the supplements.
So, why do we need to take supplements? Can’t we just eat the right foods and get all the vitamins and minerals our bodies need? No, we can’t. First off look at what you eat. A majority of American’s eat fast food 1 time per day. There is minimal to no vitamins/minerals in that food. A majority of American’s don’t consume more then 3 servings of fruits and veggies per day! So, if you are not even consuming the recommended 6-8 servings of fruit and veggies per day how do you think you are getting all your vitamins and minerals? You’re not. This is why you need a supplement. Even if you eat super healthy you are not consuming enough to get in all the vitamins/minerals your body needs to be as healthy as it can be. this is everything you would need to eat in 1 day to get in all the vitamins and minerals your body needs!
If you are currently taking a multivitamin, I want you to do this test on it. Drop the vitamin in warm water and see how long it takes to dissolve. Ideally, you want the vitamin to dissolve quickly. No more then 20 minutes. If your vitamin is not fully dissolved that means it is not dissolving in your body so you are missing out on essential vitamins and minerals. This photo shows this test being done on a Shaklee vitamin (on the left) and a store brand multivitamin (on the right) . As you can see the Shaklee vitamin started dissolving within 30 seconds and was completely dissolved within 15 minutes. The store brand multivitamin started dissolving at the 2 minute mark and was NOT dissolved at the 15 minute mark. This test also shows why you need to be using a high quality multivitamin.
